about

Artist : BIOGEN
Name : Contemporary Electronics Vol.2
Label : Uni:form
Cat. : UNI07

Biogen (Sigurbjörn Thorgrímsson) was a different kind of musician, in
many ways. He always travelled the road less taken. His works were
full of contrast. Occasionally it was soft and mellow—like a cloud in
trousers. The listener would be aware after minutes of listening that
they’d hardly taken a breath. Biogen would call it “sofatrance.” Other
times the music was harsh and uncompromising. There would be
uncomfortable, irrational beats and glitches. It was “Weirdcore”—a
vast uncharted territory. Some might be tempted to connect the
contrast and sometimes contradictions in his music to his hard, long
battle with manic-depressive disorder. The disparity in his music was
its strength. The listener could never know what to expect.

It’s been a many years since Biogen passed away, but his influence is keenly felt among Icelandic electronic musicians. In the early ‘90s, Sigurbjörn “Bjössi” .Thorgrímsson was a pioneer of the modern electronic scene as a member of the old skool hardcore band Ajax with his friend Thor, and who for a short time counted Goldie as vocalist, and cemented his reputation for pushing the limits under his Biogen pseudonym. His musical creations weren’t made to serve the past or the present, but the future.

Contemporary Electronics Vol. 2. was initially released back in 1999.
It was one of the first glimpse into his voyage into what later became
Weirdcore. It was hypnotic, creative and unwavering. A-side begins
with "Hexagraphic Unicursity", a hypnotic, yet claustrophobic
distorted beats - full of tension and anticipation. Next is "
RF RVK", which adds a touch of deep house to experimental Techno
through its complex web of rhythmic mechanical sound-scape. B-Sides
starts with "Hip Troopology": an epitome of his Weirdcore ideology.
It's relentless and unfaltering with abstract beats and growling
synths. Lastly we have "InfraGenitize", which is a chaotic and
experimental electro which finely completes this epic work from an
Icelandic electronica music originator who left us way too soon.
